Cockroaches can be found all over the world. In Canada, the most common species by far is the German cockroach. They can live outside in the wild, or they can infest any type of building. They are one of the most highly adaptable species on the planet. Cockroaches can live anywhere they can find enough food, water and heat. They are generally nocturnal, although you might see them during the day as well – especially if the infestation is large.



During the day, they prefer to hide anywhere they can feel safe from harm. If they are in a home, they will normally dwell in cupboards, appliances, plumbing or crawl spaces. They will scatter quickly if their hiding spots are disturbed. While cockroaches often appear in large numbers, they are not social insects like bees or ants. Each female cockroach is capable of reproducing, often laying hundreds of eggs in a lifetime.
